Dawn Landes: ROW
(strings arranged, performed, & recorded by OSR)

This concept album represents a studio version of the music from the musical ROW, based on the story of Tori Murden McClure, the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The record features a brilliant Louisville-centric cast of guest musicians. More about this interesting and inspiring project at Dawn’s site; or, listen & buy ROW on Bandcamp or your platform of choice.

All of the strings were arranged, performed, and recorded by Scott Moore; in a way, this project was the maiden voyage for Open String Recordings!

“Dear Heart” (above) is a nice showcase of a part that weaves from a single fiddle line to a fuller “section” sound. By permission of the artist, here are a couple of additional short excerpts from the album, before & after strings were added:

Note: "Before" (no strings) excerpts are from early rough mixes, sent to us to arrange and overdub onto. "After" (with strings) excerpts are the same files with string arrangements overdubbed. Strings are heard here at a relatively high volume, so the string parts are easily distinguished. To hear the excellent finished product, go check out ROW!

Before & After:
Dawn Landes, ”Tee-a-Wee”

Awhile back, Dawn asked about adding a bit of violin to a short song she’d written, inspired by the biologist Rachel Carson’s transcriptions of birdsong.

One violin track became two, then three, and then . . . hey, she told us to “go to town,” so we did!

Strings arranged and recorded by Scott Moore
